In August 2005 Master Sergeant Ivica Jerak died in operations in Iraq. He is part of nearly 8,000 immigrants who join U.S. military each year. Sergeant Jerak was born in modern-day Croatia and joined the U.S. Army in 1988. He served as a member of 1st SFOD-D or publicly known as Delta Force, the unit specialized for urban warfare.
Ivica Jerak was killed on August 25, 2005, alongside two other soldiers when a bomb exploded near their position near the town Husaybaha in northern Iraq. He was buried at the military cemetery in Arlington.
