Portuguese Army Adopts Glock 17 as its new service pistol. In an official statement, Glock announced that the Portuguese Army will use their new Glock 17 Gen5 FS pistol as its official secondary weapon. The contract was signed after Glock competed against several manufacturers (Sig Sauer, H&K, CZ, Beretta) in a NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) tender in July 2019. The first 2910 pistols have started to arrive in Portugal today and the process should be concluded before the end of the year.
NATO support
After competing in the NATO support and procurement agency (NSPA), Glock wins the tender for the Portuguese Army’s new sidearm with the Glock 17 Gen5 FS Coyote.
“We are proud to be selected to support the missions of the Portuguese military with the latest generation of GLOCK pistols”, said Richard Flür, Director of International Sales at GLOCK GmbH. “The Portuguese Army is among multiple military and law enforcement entities which GLOCK strongly supports in the region and we are excited to welcome them to the GLOCK family.”
Portuguese distributor, Sodarca Lda. , supported Glock in this tender. “This public competition has been expected for several years and has been finally concluded successfully with the best option possible,” said Joao Bravo, CEO of Sodarca Group.
FN assault rifles and machine guns
After the recent acquisition of the FN SCAR-L for its assault rifle and FN Minimi for the Squad Automatic Weapon, the Portuguese military selected, for its secondary weapon, the Glock 17 Gen5 FS (front serrations) in a custom design in Coyote/FDE color. The Glock 17 will be replacing the legendary but outdated pistols in service until now, the Walther P38, the Beretta 92, the HK USP, and the SIG P228. Portuguese Army Adopts Glock 17 as the effort to modernize its Army.
The reversible magazine catch and ambidextrous slide stop lever offer flexibility to meet the needs of both lefts- and right-handed shooters. The G17 Gen5 also features the Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB) for increased accuracy and precision. A lanyard loop inspired on the G19X, the Gen5 enhanced trigger system, front serrations, and Glock night sights also include the custom features.
Glock says there are no plans to release this variation of the Glock 17 Gen5 to the commercial market. We hope 2020 will bring us more news about it.
