The legendary TV-Show Band of Brothers from 2001 and his follow-up The Pacific from 2010 will be continued by Masters of the Air, an upcoming war drama miniseries based on the actions of the Eighth Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

Masters of the Air

That will be the first project announced by Apple which is moving into the entertainment world. The show will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks in Apple’s own production studio. The Masters of the Air will be a limited drama series and will be available exclusively through Apple’s new Apple TV+ streaming service. It is the first series to be self-produced by Apple’s new studio.

The Masters of the Air is based on the book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany which was written by Donald L. Miller. The story follows the American bomber crews who flew missions over Germany in World War II. According to some reports, the series would focus on the 100th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force.

Band of Brothers and The Pacific both aired on HBO to tremendous critical acclaim. The two miniseries received 43 Emmy nominations and won 14 Emmy awards at the time.

Deadline reported the series contains eight episodes at a production cost of over $200 million, while The Hollywood Reporter said it contains nine episodes at a production cost of $250 million.

Spielberg and Hanks

Spielberg and Hanks developed Masters of the Air with HBO and had intended to keep the series there. HBO eventually passed on producing the show earlier this year which opened the door for Apple to step in.

This is the second project that Spielberg has announced with Apple’s new streaming service. Previously, he announced that he is producing a series called Amazing Stories for Apple.
