Fate of John Cantlie remains unknown

His last whereabouts was Mosul. Th last time he was seen alive was in December 2016 in propaganda video filmed in the Iraqi city of Mosul, just before the East Mosul offensive. Since then, nothing. The Mosul is deliberated but there is no clue about John Cantlie, the British journalist who was held captive since 2012.

The British journalist was kidnapped while covering Syria’s war in 2012 along with American James Foley, who was beheaded by the ISIS in 2014. He had previously been kidnapped in Syria in July 2012 but was rescued a week later.

After disappearing for almost two years following his second abduction in late 2012, Cantlie resurfaced on 18 September 2014 in a video posted by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in the first episode of a multi-part series entitled Lend Me Your Ears.

As of February 2015, ISIL has released a total of six videos in the Lend Me Your Ears series, all of which feature Cantlie speaking while sitting at a wooden table and wearing orange prison garb against a black backdrop.

ISIL has released three additional videos apart from the Lend Me Your Ears series. These videos are noteworthy for depicting Cantlie as a Western journalist rather than a Western hostage. In all videos, Cantlie attempts to characterize the facts on the ground in Kobani, Mosul and rebel-controlled Aleppo as far more favorable to ISIS than is portrayed in the Western media.

John Cantlie in Syria 2012

Although undated, in his latest public video John Cantlie talks about tank warfare in Mosul in a video titled as Tank Hunters. He is speaking in front of bridges in the city which were destroyed by coalition air strikes in November, suggesting the footage is recent.

The video, released on December 13, 2016, takes the form of other news report style pieces Cantile has been forced to make since being abducted almost five years ago. Giving rehearsed updates on the effects bombing on Mosul has had for civilians, he looks very thin and pale.

The Mosul was deliberated and Iraqi Security Forces are still sweeping area but so far, they didnt find any clue of his presence in Mosul. John Cantlie’s faith is unknown at the moment.
